Well happy Rigel January everyone!
I had an already cut bomber languishing in my UFO pile so Rigel January was just the motivation I needed to finish this project off (thanks Ginger!). I’m not even sure why I abandoned this garment in the first place since everything was cut to snuff. I must have had a more tantalizing project on the burners that distracted me. It’s quite a challenge to stay focused when the world is full of beautiful fabrics and patterns.
The body of my bomber is a pre-quilted textile I found at Mill Ends. I had originally thought this fabric was a woven, but upon closer inspection I feel that it might be a knit with very low stretch. Blackbird Fabrics appears to have some very similar fabric for sale if not the same exact stuff. My black ribbing was also purchased at Mill Ends. It’s very synthetic, but has great recovery and I’m going to venture a guess that it will avoid pilling all together which is a bonus. Ribbing is a brave new world for me and I’ve had mixed results to say the least.
I’ve made this pattern before so I knew the XS fits right out of the envelope. I’ve heard that many people have lengthened the sleeves by an inch or two, but I like the cuff hitting right at my wrist. The only change I made was to draft a lining which I’ll share a tutorial for later in the week. It’s a pretty easy alteration and results in a more polished garment.
Oh and I also added some piping to the facing/lining for a little pop. I’ve seen this detail in J Crew suit jackets and thought it was a nice touch. I considered piping all the exterior seams as well because the blue is just so pretty against the grey, but I was a little worried that the blue might limit my outfit pairings.
I’m excited for spring to arrive so I can wear this jacket without a large down monstrosity on top. Anyone else participating in Rigel Bomber Jacket January?
