The holiday season is upon us, and for many that also means traveling to visit with loved ones, so today I would like to present to you the perfect travel companion: The Portside Duffel! This bag is the perfect size to use as a weekender or a carry-on. The pattern actually also includes a dopp kit and a zippered pouch for a lovely matching travel trio.
I used leather for the bottom and side pocket (only had enough leather for one side pocket, the pattern calls for two), an Indian Ikat for the upper portion of the bag, which I underlined with some canvas from my stash to give it more structure and durability, and I lined it with some midweight cotton from the Cotton + Steel August collection by Sarah Watts. The straps are made of poly webbing. Sourcing the hardware and webbing and waiting for it to arrive is what took the longest for this project. Once I had all the materials it sewed up in no time at all. I actually had to use three different sources for the hardware: Pacific Trimming for the 1 1/4″ webbing, the triangle D-rings, the 21″ zipper, and the metal stud feet; Buckle Guy for the swivel hooks and the strap adjuster; and an Etsy vendor for the 1 1/2″ webbing.
I didn’t vary much from the original pattern much: I left off one outer side pocket because of a lack of leather, added interior pockets to the lining, interfaced the lining rather than the exterior segments of the back since I was using leather, opted for a slide strap adjuster rather than D-rings for the shoulder strap, and added stud feet to the bottom of the bag to help reduce the wear on and prolong the life of the leather.
I am really pleased with the outcome of the this project and hope to use this bags for my travels for many years to come!
