Well hello there. I’ve got a casual little hack to share today. My new top, or I should say topS, are made from the most hackable of patterns the Renfrew Top by Sewaholic. I’ve attacked this pattern a couple of times to suit my whims (1, 2, 3, and this one by Tall Sarah) and it’s proved to be a great block each time.
This particular hack was inspired by an image (below left) that Laney shared with me and I promptly pinned. The silhouette seemed like a nice addition to my everyday wardrobe which is quite casual. I love that this top is simple and yet unique with an asymmetrical ruffle or “ruff” as I’m now affectionately calling them. Oh yeah and the loose fit was obviously a highlight for me as well. The bigger the garment the more I like it these days (you may have noticed 😉 ).
As I alluded to I’ve actually made this top twice in an attempt to uncover the perfect fabric combination. My first version was a grey knit and black chiffon combo (pictured below). I was pretty pleased with the result except that the grey Kaufman knit was not as drapey as the sweater knit pictured above. My inspiration image seemed to have less body so I thought I’d give the look a second shot with a much slinkier striped ITY knit. The ruffle on my second hack was also poly chiffon, but this time white. The ITY hangs closer to my body, but the serged seam attaching the ruffle at the hem still gives the bottom of this top a bit of volume. However maybe a little volume isn’t as bad as I originally thought because the grey and black version is growing on me. Perhaps I have stumbled upon two perfect, or at least darn good, fabric combinations rather than just one.
I’ll be posting a step by step how to for this hack later in the week so check back if you’re interested. Until then happy sewing everyone!
