I am so in love with this dress! I couldn’t wait to get my little paws on the Alder Shirtdress pattern so as soon as the printed patterns came into Grey’s I scooped up a copy and got right to work. I had already planned the fabric I wanted to use and had pre-washed it in anticipation. The fabric is a grey cotton printed with an abstract metallic design. Now that I see it in photos it almost looks like marbled stone, or lightening…
I opted for View B with the gathered waist starting from the hips and continuing around the back – hooray for expanding the Archer Shirt butt ruffle trend!
I made it up in a straight size zero, and the fit is spot on – I did add two inches to the length of the skirt after seeing photos of Jen wearing hers – I felt it’d be easier to wear here in breezy Boston with a tad more length. I finished most of the interior seams with french seams save for the gathered section of the waist – for that I used some rayon hug snug folded over the seam to bind it. I chose some silver buttons from my stash to match the silver print on the fabric.
This dress is so comfy! It fits perfectly in all the right places so although it’s loose it doesn’t look frumpy. I’ve worn it a ton already since finishing it -I am sure I will be making this pattern up over and over! It’s so important to have go-to garments like this in your wardrobe that are easy to wear and make you feel good.
2 1/2 yards 54″ wide cotton
10 – 1/2″ silver buttons
Here is an image of the hug snug bias binding used to finished the gathered section of the skirt joined to the bodice of the dress. Please excuse the gathering stitches I didn’t bother to remove…
