A few weeks ago Katy and I had the good fortune of coming across an estate sale in Brookline with a cache of vintage clothing in very good condition. We sorted, schemed, and selected our favorites then giddily made off with our new treasures. One of my favorite finds was a terracotta colored lace suit. The jacket was a perfect fit, but I couldn’t see myself wearing the long, immodestly unlined a-line skirt. I decided that the skirt had to be transformed, not into another form of skirt, no, it was destined to become a pair of shorts!
I chose to use a pattern I had made up once before, Simplicity 6100. I made version A, but without the belt loops. I had to carefully lay out each of the pieces to ensure the lace pattern would match up and there was enough material in the skirt. Thankfully there was. I did underline the shorts with tan silk habotai. Overall I am very pleased with the outcome, and have already worn the shorts a few times, with tights to guard against the cold, of course.
